Pre-K Model Cohort Classroom Pilot in Forsyth County Great Success

The Pre-K Model Cohort Classroom Pilot in Forsyth County is a shining example of how collaborative efforts in early childhood education can drive impactful change.  Through the Pre-K Priority consortium, early childhood advocates, and Smart Start of Forsyth County, the initiative successfully implemented cohort-model Pre-K classrooms, highlighting the power of partnerships in shaping the future of North Carolina’s children.

The City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County played a critical role in this initiative.  Recognizing the need to bridge opportunity gaps, local leaders allocated American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to Smart Start of Forsyth County in 2023, enabling the Pre-K Model Cohort Classroom Pilot implementation. This strategic investment in early education has benefited children and strengthened the community and workforce.Year 1 Outcomes: A Strong StartIn its first year, the program reached 347 students across 28 classrooms in NC Pre-K centers, private early childcare, Head Start, and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.  The initiative also focused on teacher retention and development:Teacher Support: 44 teachers and assistants received salary equity and retention bonuses totaling $418,000, achieving an 80% retention rate.  Nine staff members received tuition scholarships.Professional Development: The program provided 540 hours of coaching and 428 hours of professional development.Family Engagement: Eight Family Advocates supported 394 students, providing language assistance.Impact on Student ProgressDespite typical challenges, 90% of students showed improvements in language, literacy, and math.  Health initiatives ensured students were screened and ready for school, underscoring the program’s comprehensive approach.The Pre-K Model Cohort Classrooms offer a blueprint for expanding high-quality early education across North Carolina, proving that strategic investment can lead to long-term academic success.
