Recognizing the need to bridge opportunity gaps, local leaders allocated American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to Smart Start of Forsyth County in 2023, enabling the Pre-K Model Cohort Classroom Pilot implementation. This strategic investment in early education has benefited children and strengthened the community and workforce.Year 1 Outcomes: A Strong StartIn its first year, the program reached 347 students across 28 classrooms in NC Pre-K centers, private early childcare, Head Start, and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. The initiative also focused on teacher retention and development:Teacher Support: 44 teachers and assistants received salary equity and retention bonuses totaling $418,000, achieving an 80% retention rate. Nine staff members received tuition scholarships.Professional Development: The program provided 540 hours of coaching and 428 hours of professional development.Family Engagement: Eight Family Advocates supported 394 students, providing language assistance.Impact on Student ProgressDespite typical challenges, 90% of students showed improvements in language, literacy, and math.
